Home Defense

How can I protect my home?

When things go wrong at night in your own house it's best to have something that packs a punch. People can have a shotgun at home with scatter shot to spray over a large area, this helps if you want to ensure a hit. But if you have kids, pets or just don't want to damage your home then you might want to consider a full sized handgun so you won't inadvertently hit something else. A long gun will also be harder to aim in tight spaces. If you have kids, make sure your guns have locks. For speed of retrieval you can try a biometric fingerprint safe by your bedside but it may not reliably acknowledge your fingerprint faster than you can turn a key.

What are the best guns for home defense?

My recommended home defense weapon is a double action revolver like the Ruger LCR. It can sit fully loaded forever, you don't have to worry about the magazine spring wearing down. Because it's double action, its ready to go without cocking the hammer. The most popular maker of revolvers is Smith & Wesson.

If you favor a shotgun, choose a pump action shotgun because they are more reliable and won't wear over time. The two most popular models of pump action shotguns are the Mossberg 500 series and the Remington 870 series.

  1. Ruger LCR - .38 Special
  2. Taurus 4510PD-3B "Public Defender" - .410 Bore
  3. S&W Model 686 Plus - 3", 7 Shot - .357 Magnum, .38 Special
  4. Mossberg 500 HS410 Home Security - .410 Bore
  5. Mossberg 500 Tactical Cruiser - 6 Shot - 12 Gauge
  6. Remington Model 870 Express Synthetic 7-Round - 12 Gauge, 20 Gauge
  7. More double action revolvers ...
  8. More pump action shotguns ...
